The 2024 AMA Supercross season is less than one week away; the season opener race, Anaheim 1, will happen on January 6, 2024, at Angle Stadium. According to rumors on the street, this will be one of the strongest fields in years, with several past winners prepared to compete and intriguing plot points like the world champion MXGP Jorge Prado's debut. Let's look at a few things you should know about AMA Supercross before we get into the specifics.
The motocross was first played on August 24, 1948, at Buffalo Stadium in the picturesque Parisian district of Montorouge, France. In the 1960s, the motocross fever spread across the United States. Bill France, a former NASCAR driver and mastermind event organizer, took the risky idea to organize a high-octane professional motocross race during the historic 1971 Daytona Bike Week. The next year, a new venue for the race was chosen: the Daytona Speedway. The circuit was precisely built on the lovely green space between the main grandstand and the pit lane.
In 1972, a historic event known as the Super Bowl of Motocross took place in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, laying the framework for modern Supercross. This important event also served as the grand finale for SuperMotocross 2023. The number of stadium events increased with time, peaking in 1974 with the inaugural recognized championship, which consisted of only four races. Then, in 1977, a new era in motocross racing began when the name "supercross" was created.
The Triple Crown, an exciting new racing style that featured three races contested at night without heats, was launched in 2018. The top eighteen fastest riders qualify straight into the three races of the evening, plus there is an LCQ before the opening ceremonies that permits four additional riders to move forward.
The Olympic-inspired scoring system used in the Triple Crown format awards 1 point for first place, 2 points for second place, and so on. There is an intriguing twist, though: the rider with the lowest score wins and receives a considerable 25 points towards the regular championship. A total of 22 points are awarded to the runner in second place, 20 points to the one in third, and so on.
250 = 3 races at 10 minutes + 1 lap
450 = 3 races at 12 minutes + 1 lap
A rider's results from the three Triple Crown races—Anaheim 2, Indianapolis, and St. Louis—will be added together to determine the official 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Triple Crown Champion. This makes the Triple Crown a "championship within a championship."
